FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What qualifications must I have to be an Athreon home-based medical transcriptionist?
To qualify for our home-based medical transcriptionist jobs, you must show proof of graduation from a formal transcription training program. We will also consider professional on-the job transcription training as a substitute for an academic program, provided you can substantiate a minimum of 2 years’ relevant work experience as a transcriptionist. If you’re currently enrolled in a transcription training program, please wait until you can furnish proof of graduation before applying. Athreon does not offer a transcription training curriculum. All our home-based transcription jobs are independent contractor status.
What is the process for becoming a legal or medical transcriptionist?
A number of schools offer transcription training programs. Depending on the institution, the program may include at-home and/or classroom training. Be sure that the school you select is jointly endorsed by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). A list of endorsed institutions is available here.
To learn more about the process of becoming a medical transcriptionist, we encourage you to visit the AHDI website. Best of luck!
Is certification necessary for home-based transcription jobs?
While certification is beneficial, it is not required to transcribe for Athreon. We are more concerned that you have the necessary educational background and experience.

To be an Athreon transcriptionist, you must have the following:
- High-speed Internet connection
- Microsoft Vista or newer (our system is incompatible with Mac computers)
Are any reference materials required?
Absolutely! The appropriate reference materials are as essential to home-based transcription jobs as having a computer and Internet connection. Will I have to transcribe for physicians and other dictators with heavy accents?
It’s always possible that some dictators may not speak English fluently, which can make transcription somewhat of a challenge. Fortunately, all our medical transcription home-based jobs are backed with Help Desk support to help you decode dictation from clients who speak English as a second language (ESL). Our proofreading team also provides valuable feedback that will greatly simplify the ESL transcription process.
How do I get work assignments?
Our home-based transcription jobs give our typists the opportunity to work with a dedicated group of authors and support staff. This sets us apart from other transcription services where typists must compete for open assignments. Athreon typists have access to work 24/7/365, giving them maximum flexibility to work when it’s convenient.
